Soundtrack

A bit of explanation is order... :)

Music is essential to my writing process. My speakers are bigger than my computer by at least an order of magnitude. I simply can't put thoughts on paper without music pushing me forward. My taste is extremely varied, from classic rock to female-fronted symphonic metal, from movie scores to techno and industrial. As long as it doesn't have grunting dudes in it, I'm happy. My current digital library has over 10,000 pieces in it, of which only 300 or so comprise my standard playlist.

Much as I would like to write my own music, my dabbling in such arts are still too formative for the purposes of creating a soundtrack. However, I've found existing pieces that fit very nicely with various themes. This list will grow with time and opprtunity. I can't give you the songs, of course, but I can point out where you can buy them. Enjoy.

A Journey of Dragons, Theme

"Ghost Love Score (Instrumental)" — Nightwish, I Wish I had an Angel

This is one of the most stirring pieces of music I've ever heard — an orchestral instrumental (no vocals) piece from the symphonic metal band Nightwish. No screaming guitars or growling guys — just a fantastic piece of soaring music that encapsulates the mood I'm looking for when writing these books.

Kaylen and Alanora, Theme

"Undying Love" — Two Steps from Hell, Invincible

This piece is "Trailer Music" — the kind of symphonic, rich, strong music you see in movie trailers. It said "Kaylen and Alanora" the moment I first heard it, though it could also refer to Symurall and Kahshiki as well.

Symurall's Theme

"Under Pressure, Orchestral Version" — Queen (as played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)

A soaring symphony that goes well with sea dragons, the kind who sail on the edges of storms. Symurall, in many ways, is the heart of the books, the dragon who... well, read the damned book. :)

Sytherek's Theme

"The Tempest" — Mike Oldfield, Music of the Spheres

In 2009, Mike Oldfield (of Tubular Bells fame) released a full-orchestra album that is both rare and beautiful. This piece reflects Sytherek's complex personality and chaotic passions.

Zarah's Theme

"Meadows of Heaven (Orchestral Version)" — Nightwish, The Sound of Nightwish Reborn

Zarah may not seem to be a major character, but she will grow into one in the second book and beyond. She survives a a horrific event to find something more within herself that changes the entire world of Syraqua. The piece I've selected is another stirring symphonic piece from the metal band Nightwish.

"Unstoppable" — E.S. Posthumus, Makara

Karfegren, prime consort of of Kyazura and father of a fallen daughter, leads two dozen dragons in a vengeful assauly on the dwarven stronghold of Gyre.
